I hadn’t been to the New York Deli, South side in years. A friend of ours who lives in New York City stopped here when he was in town. He brought over some take-out from the New York Deli. He used to live here and loved this place. After eating lunch, we loved it as well.
When I decided to become a vegetarian, I was afraid of never getting that Reuben sandwich taste. A taste that I dearly loved. I enjoyed the corned beef, with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, the Russian Dressing with mustard on some great rye bread with of course a pickle. It is all there at the New York Deli. For meat eaters, you can have the regular Reuben(12.95) as I just described above. For me and my vegetarian friends, you can enjoy a Tofu Reuben(12.95). That works out very nicely for everybody.

Instead of plenty of corned beef, there was plenty of tofu. This sandwich had Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russian Dressing on the side with excellent toasted rye bread. Below is a close-up of the Tofu Reuben.

This photo was taken before I added lots of mustard. Oh, My!!! I don’t miss the corned beef, not even a little bit. The toasted rye bread had a real nice crunch and gave the sandwich a wonderful mouth feel. Every ingredient just added to this incredible Reuben. It was so delicious.

Not only do you get a pickle(which is hard to find unless you ask in Santa Fe) but fries and coleslaw. The fries were nicely seasoned and were not greasy. I loved the coleslaw because you could taste some vinegar. The vinegar was not over powering but just enough to make the cabbage sing. What a meal! This sandwich only got better when I had a portion for dinner.
I also tried a piece of the Grilled Portobello Mushroom Burger(12.95). Below is a photo of this delicious Portobello Burger.

Our very carnivore friend was so impressed with the Portobello Burger that he said the next time he goes to the New York Deli, he was going to get a mushroom burger instead of a hamburger. The Grilled Portobello Burger came with lettuce, tomato, grilled red onions, and melted provolone cheese. The Portobello Mushroom was huge. It was also perfectly seasoned and cooked.

Once again this grilled sandwich was delicious and came with fries, coleslaw, and a pickle. What a pleasant surprise!
