We finally made it back to Bonsai Asian Tacos. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Santa Fe. We were talking to some tourists from Phoenix who told us that they ate local while they were here. They came for a month. I thought why would you even think about eating at any chain restaurant when there are so many small restaurants and food trucks here.

There was a new item on Bonsai Asian Tacos’ menu, a Poke Bowl. This addition quickly caught our attention. It had poke watermelon, avocado, seaweed salad, some Asian Slaw, green onions, cilantro sitting on a bed of brown rice. The standard proteins were: pulled pork, chicken, tofu, and tempeh. For an upcharge of 1.50, you can purchase some Bulgarian Beef, pork belly, duck or salmon. Bonsai was out of salmon. That was ok with us.
We tried the Poke Bowl with tempeh. The watermelon was the best watermelon I have ever had. It was spiced just like Poke, but only better. It was lighter and the spices tasted more concentrated. Also I didn’t get that heavy feeling in my stomach. As you can see Bonsai didn’t skimp on the tempeh. This bowl was perfect for a very hot day. There was plenty of brown rice and the rest of the bowl was perfectly seasoned. We brought our food home. The Poke Bowl went very nicely with a beer. What a great dinner!
